Passport or Visa Photo File Too Large — How to Fix It

“File too large” is one of the most common upload errors on visa and passport portals. The photo looks fine; the JPEG from your phone is simply heavier than the form allows. This guide lists typical kilobyte ceilings and the safe order of operations: resize pixels first, then compress — without crushing quality so far that the portal complains about over-compression.

Why “make it smaller” sometimes fails twice

  • If you only lower JPEG quality on a huge phone photo, you can hit “overly compressed” while still being over the KB limit.
  • If you screenshot a screenshot, quality collapses and dimensions are wrong.
  • HEIC/PNG must become JPEG before many portals accept the file.
  1. Crop and resize to the required pixels (for example 600×600 for DS-160).
  2. Export as JPEG under the KB limit.
  3. If the form says “overly compressed,” go back to the original and export at higher quality after resizing.

Compress to an exact KB target in the browser

ExactPhoto’s file-too-large tool keeps the image on your device. Set the max kilobytes (240, 120, or custom), drop the file, and download a JPEG at that ceiling.

Compression does not fix a bad crop, a busy background, or glasses rules. Use the document tool for composition checks when you still need the right frame.
